Marvin Gaye: Father
built 654 days ago
Marvin Pentz Gaye, Jr. was born in 1939 in Washington D.C. to a preacher of an eccentric, strict Christian church which did not observe any holidays. Marvin began his singing career at the age of three in the church choir. Music was his escape from the harsh reality of his home life. His father was an alcoholic who would beat his four children on a daily basis over the most minor mistakes. This treatment probably influenced Marvin's resistance to regimentation and authority, a trait that affected much of his professional life.

In 1982 Gaye became involved with Lady Edith Foxwell, former wife of the British movie director Ivan Foxwell, and spent much time with her at Sherston, her Wiltshire estate. At the time Lady Edith, born into the Irish aristocracy, ran the then highly fashionable Embassy Club and was referred to in the media as "the queen of London cafe society." The story of their affair was told by writer Stan Hey in the April 2004 issue of GQ magazine. The report quoted writer/composer Bernard J. Taylor as saying he was told by Lady Edith that she and Gaye had discussed marriage before he was killed by his father.

Marvin Gaye’s career was full of ups and downs and in the later stages of his career he seemed to have trouble getting along with anyone. He became more and more reclusive and more and more reliant on cocaine. He let those around him know that he wanted to end his life and talked of suicide. His wish was finally granted when he provoked his father into shooting him during a violent confrontation at his parents’ home where he had sought refuge after a series of mental breakdowns.
