In 1939 the first comic to come under Marvel Comics was Carl Burgos’ ‘Human Torch’. The support of the first comic was provided by Funnies, Inc. but from the second book onward Marvel Comics had their own staff. The comics were then named ‘Marvel Mystery Comics’. Soon the comics got its first true editor in writer-artist Joe Simon who teamed up with legendary Jack Kirby to produce the first immensely popular patriotic hero Captain America. The Captain America comics touched a circulation of one million. Some other familiar superheroes of the time were Whizzer, Miss America, etc.
Amazing Adventures Vol. 1, #3 (Aug. 1961), the first modern comic labeled "Marvel Comics" (MC below Comics Code seal). Cover art by Jack Kirby (penciler) & Dick Ayers (inker). In 1971, Marvel Comics editor-in-chief Stan Lee was approached by the United States Department of Health, Education, and Welfare to do a comic book story about drug abuse. Lee agreed and wrote a three-part Spider-Man story portraying drug use as dangerous and unglamorous. However, the industry's self-censorship board, the Comics Code Authority, refused to approve the story because of the presence of narcotics, deeming the context of the story irrelevant. Lee, with Goodman's approval, published the story regardless in The Amazing Spider-Man #96-98 (May-July 1971), without CCA approval. The storyline was well-received and the CCA's argument for denying its approval was criticized as counterproductive. The Code was subsequently revised the same year.[13]
In Spider-Man(TM) 3, based on the legendary Marvel Comics series, Peter Parker has finally managed to strike a balance between his devotion to M.J. and his duties as a superhero. But there is a storm brewing on the horizon. When his Spider-Man suit suddenly changes, turning jet-black and enhancing his powers, it transforms Peter as well. Under the influence of the suit, Peter becomes prideful and overconfident and he begins to neglect the ones he cares about the most. As two of the most-feared villains yet, Sandman and Venom, gather unparalleled power and a thirst for retribution, Peter's greatest battle is the one within himself.

Sanderson's survey of Marvel's costumed champions really starts with the 1961 launching of the Fantastic Four, who led the way for Spider-Man, the Hulk, the X-Men, and the hundreds of other inhabitants of what would come to be known as the Marvel Universe and "a modern-day mythology." Over the years, the many writers and artists who chronicled these heroes' exploits strived to maintain a tight-knit continuity to lend consistency, if hardly verisimilitude, to their larger-than-life adventures. Unlike Les Daniels, whose MARVEL related the company's history through its comics and their creators, Sanderson focuses on the characters and the considerable changes they have undergone to stay timely. His big, copiously illustrated book should thrill current comics fans, and baby boomers who haven't picked up a Marvel comic in decades may be astonished to learn what has become of some childhood heroes.
