Marvel's comics were noted for focusing on characterization to a greater extent than most superhero comics before them. This was true of The Amazing Spider-Man, in particular. Its young hero suffered from self-doubt and mundane problems like any other teenager. Marvel superheroes are often flawed, freaks, and misfits, unlike the perfect, handsome, athletic heroes found in previous traditional comic books. Some Marvel heroes looked like villains and monsters. In time, this non-traditional approach would revolutionize comic books.

Spider-Man 3 is directed by Sam Raimi, who ... directed the first two blockbuster installments of the Marvel Comics superhero, Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2. The picture reunites the cast led by Tobey Maguire, Kirsten Dunst and James Franco. To date, the Spider-Man series has surpassed $1.6 billion in worldwide box office receipts.

Newsarama is reporting that Kevin Smith ("Clerks") and J. Michael Straczynski ("Babylon 5") have each signed exclusive, two-year deals with Marvel Comics. The deals will not impact Stracsynski's announced projects for Top Cow and Wildstorm but will at least delay Smith's proposed revival of "The Brave and the Bold" for DC Comics. Smith will take over writing chores on Straczynski's "Amazing Spider-Man," while Straczynski moves to a new, ongoing Spider-Man title called simply "Spider-Man." Paul Jenkins remains as writer on "Peter Parker, Spider-Man," as far as anyone outside Marvel knows at this time.

Marvel Adventures Spider-Man #31 will arrive in stores on Sept. 6 from Marvel Comics. The issue is written by Peter David, with art by Pop Mhan and a cover by Patrick Scherberger.

Directed by Sam Raimi, 'Spider-Man' centers on student Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) who, after being bitten by a genetically-altered spider, gains superhuman strength and the spider-like ability to cling to any surface. He vows to use his abilities to fight crime, coming to understand the words of his beloved Uncle Ben: "With great power comes great responsibility."

Anya Corazon is the first latina superhero to appear in the Amazing Fantasy comic series from Marvel Comics. A half-mexican urban hero, Anya -a phonetic play on the Spanish word for spider (araña)- derived her Spider-Man-like powers from an ancient mystic clan.
