LA QUINTA - Former Pacific Life Open singles and doubles champion Martina Hingis is back in the desert this week, making her American debut follwing three years away from the game. But her first stop was playing a pro-am event Tuesday to benefit the Tim and Tom Gullickson Foundation.

As an advertisement for herself, Martina Hingis's petulant performance in the French Open final against Steffi Graf two weeks ago gave cause for pause. ''Her game may be mature beyond its years, but her behavior was a very public temper tantrum, and her offenses were definitely booable offenses,'' said Mary Carillo.
