Martha Stewart Living: New York
built 643 days ago
Martha Stewart was born in Jersey City, New Jersey to middle-class Polish-American parents Edward "Eddie" Kostyra (c. 1912 – 1979) and Martha Ruszkowski Kostyra (b. Buffalo, New York, September 16, 1914 – d. Norwalk, Connecticut, November 16, 2007)[1]. Stewart, along with her five siblings, was raised in Nutley, New Jersey.[2] Stewart graduated from Nutley High School in her hometown.[3]
When she cuts the ribbon on the Martha Stewart Center for Living tomorrow, Martha Stewart will join the ranks of Mount Sinai Hospital donors, such as Carl Icahn and Henry Kravis, who have buildings named after them. She donated $5 million — and her design expertise — toward the new geriatric outpatient clinic on Madison Avenue and 99th Street, helping to select the bonsai tree as the center's symbol, and approved the grey tile work, earthtone paints, and stainless steel accents proposed by Pei Partnership Architects.

Production, distribution and editorial expenses increased $1.7 million, primarily reflecting the higher physical costs associated with the increase in advertising pages and circulation of Martha Stewart Living. Selling and promotion expenses increased $5.6 million, primarily due to a favorable 2006 one-time newsstand expense reduction adjustment of $3.2 million related to the settlement of certain newsstand-related fees. Additionally, selling and promotion expenses increased due to a 2007 non-recurring, employee-related separation charge and higher compensation costs as well as higher marketing costs associated with Everyday Food. Included within the Publishing segment is a $2.0 million investment in Blueprint compared to an investment of $1.7 million in the prior year quarter.
Martha Stewart After the Stewarts restored the 19th century farmhouse they had bought, Martha decided to focus her energy on gourmet cooking, having trained herself from Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking. She started a catering business in the late 1970s, and soon became known for her gourmet menus and unique, creative presentation. Within a decade, Martha Stewart, Inc., had grown into a $1 million business serving a number of corporate and celebrity clients. Stewart expanded into the world of publishing with her first book, Entertaining, which became a bestseller and was followed in quick succession by such publications as Martha Stewart’s Quick Cook Menus, Martha Stewart’s Hors d’Oeuvres, Martha Stewart’s Christmas, and Martha Stewart’s Wedding Planner. Her newfound fame took its toll on her personal life, as her marriage to Andy Stewart ended in divorce in 1990, after a bitter three-year separation.

Martha Stewart has always drawn inspiration from her surroundings. Raised in Nutley, New Jersey, in a family with six children, she developed a passion for cooking, gardening, and homekeeping in her childhood home on Elm Place. Her mother, a schoolteacher and homemaker, taught her the basics of cooking, baking, canning, and sewing; her father, a pharmaceutical salesman and avid gardener, introduced her to gardening in the family's small but orderly backyard garden when she was 3.
