Martha Stewart's image as the personification of gracious living may lead some to imagine that she grew up in the sort of rural luxury pictured in her books and magazine. In fact, she was born in the industrial city of Jersey City, New Jersey, a location known more for heavy industry than for rustic charm. Her parents, Martha and Edward Kostyra, were a schoolteacher and a pharmaceuticals salesman, respectively. When Martha was three, the family moved to Nutley, New Jersey, where she grew up with four brothers and sisters in a close-knit Polish-American family defined by the father's intense ambition for his children. Edward Kostyra taught his daughter gardening when she was only three; her mother taught her cooking and baking and sewing; she learned still more about baking pies and cakes from an elderly couple -- retired bakers -- who lived next door.

Over the last two decades Stewart has held a prominent position in the American publishing industry; as the author of several books, hundreds of articles on the domestic arts, editor of a national homekeeping magazine, host for two popular daytime television programs, and commercial spokeswoman for K-Mart. In 2001 she was named the third most powerful woman in America by Ladies Home Journal. In 2004 she was convicted of lying to investigators about a stock sale and served five months in prison.

Once again ready to expand into new areas, Stewart convinced Time to fund a television show based on the magazine... to be called Martha Stewart Living. The weekly show covered home decorating, entertaining, gardening, cooking, and featured Stewart as the host. By 1993 the show was broadcast in 84 percent of the nation's markets.

Martha Stewart Living ... said that it expects to generate revenue in the range of $330 million to $340 million for the current year, exceeding analysts' forecasts of $283 million. Howard Hochhauser, chief financial officer, projected operating income in the range of $5.5 million to $8.5 million and adjusted earnings before interest, taxes,depreciation and amortization in the range of $32 million to $35 million, including an investment of $8 million in Blueprint magazine, a lifestyle magazine aimed at women.
