In Mars Matrix, there is a system which makes it possible to improve the protagonist vessel(s) by collecting gold cubes. The cubes, which come from the destruction or damage to every object in the game, add to an "experience bar" at near the top of the screen when collected in a continuous combo. A greater amount of these gold cubes will be unleashed if the player uses reflection attacks. Once the experience bar is filled, the player's weapons will become more powerful, and then the meter zeroes out for the next experience level. A small bar located in top of the screen indicates the amount of remaining time until the combo runs out; if this happens the meter zeroes out for the current level. The meter will ... reset if the player's ship is destroyed while a combo is active.

The sound of Mars Matrix is pretty simple, composed of blazing guns and exploding spacecrafts. The sounds in Mars Matrix will remind you of some of the 2D Shooters from the past like Gradius and Raiden. The sound effects give you somewhat of an arcade feel, although you would be pounding the machine demanding your quarter back if it really were an arcade game.

Like most 2D shooters, the story to Mars Matrix is pretty light. Choose between two ships and save Mars from an onslaught of enemies by the preferred method in all shooting games ? blowing up everything to smithereens. Both ships have only one main weapon: the red rocket launches spread-like swarms of bullets while the blue battleship delivers a concentrate beam of hot death. How do you get additional weapons? you don't.

Within the vertical shooter genre, long known for hectic bullet assaults, Mars Matrix sets a new standard, even surpassing Takumi's earlier Giga Wing. The Dreamcast is such a tremendously powerful system it certainly would be able to push countless sprites around the screen at once, but there's a difference between having that power available and being able to incorporate it into a playable game (Mars Matrix was actually originally designed for older arcade hardware, but the principle remains). What developer Takumi throws at human players, expecting them to maneuver through, is audacious. Circular, cascading bullets coat the screen like bubbles in the surf washing over the beach, flowing, clumping, breaking apart, sliding through each other in all directions and speeds, leaving no space empty for long.

Mars Matrix is a top-down vertical scrolling shoot-em-up (shmup) game, originally for the Capcom CPS-2 arcade board. It is the second in a series of three Capcom/Takumi shmups, between Giga Wing and Giga Wing 2.

Mars Matrix focuses on a never ending rain of death coming downscreen at all times. You must kill every living thing on Mars to reclaim it. Everything.. Your weapons are simple. Gatling-type Automatic (1) , a Pulse Laser (2) that has shorter range but is far more powerful (has a 1 shot every 2 seconds rate of fire) and the Mosquito (3-4).
