Marlin Firearms labored for a century as an underdog levergun maker to Winchester (... of New Haven). However, in the 1980s and 1990s, Marlin finally began to outpace its old rival. It is currently the dominant seller of lever action rifles in North America. Its use of side ejection allows for flat-topped firearms, thereby making the mounting of scopes far easier than for traditional Winchesters. This helped Marlin capture more market share as American shooters came to rely more and more on optics. Marlins are also larger and stronger than most of the Winchester line, allowing them to use higher powered cartridges such as the .45-70.
Marlin Firearms started off after the Civil War (OK, Great Secession) building ladies' carry guns. By the turn of the century it was a top-quality designer and manufacturer of rugged lever-action working rifles and was renowned for high-quality rimfires.
The Marlin Company’s strong market position has always been based on the quality, relevance and professionalism of its content. Its materials are written and designed by a team of professional in-house writers, designers and photographers, including award-winning former journalists.
[T]he downrange performance of the .308 Marlin Express, which duplicates the .308 Winchester, would not have been possible without the high energy, highly progressive propellants that did not exist in the past. They burn slowly while steadily building up pressure faster. In other words, it keeps the pressure on the base of the bullet higher and longer. That results in sustained and increased velocity. It's like instead of trying to move something by banging it with a sledge hammer, you're backing a pickup truck into it."
Marlin's brute now fires Hornady's LeveRevolution spitzers, giving it another 100 yards or so of effective trajectory. It is seen here with XS ghost-ring sights, Murray Leather sling and pouch and a set of fab Steiner Peregrines.
Kenna says the key to Marlin's successful rebuffing of foreign competitors has been the quality of its products. While some European guns are equal in quality to American firearms, they are considerably more expensive. Most foreign guns, Kenna says, are noticeably inferior products. Foreign makers “are not as good at mass production,” Kenna says.
