Marlene Dietrich was born in Berlin in 1901 and studied at the Drama School run by Max Reinhardt, owner of four theatres in the city. She went on to work as a dancer in stage shows and to take small acting roles in 1920s movies and, although Reinhardt later claimed to have “discovered†her, it was more accurately director Josef von Sternberg who became her true Svengali. Dietrich was married by then and her only husband Rudolph Sieber harboured considerable disquiet about von Sternberg’s instant enthusiasm for her, based on seeing her recite one line in a production of Kaiser’s play Two Bow Ties.
