In 1992, Mark Wahlberg used his well-sculpted looks and recognition to work as an underwear model for Calvin Klein. Starting in print ads, including a large display in Times Square, Mark frequently posed with Kate Moss and eventually, both of them were hawking Calvin Klein undergarments on TV. Acting was the next logical step, and Mark Wahlberg's first role came in a forgettable 1993 TV movie The Substitute. Big screen work followed with Mark Wahlberg starring as a soldier in the Danny DeVito army comedy Renaissance Man.

The Departed’s Mark Wahlberg and Martin Scorsese are re-teaming to create a new drama series for HBO based on Atlantic City’s growth from sleepy seaside town to entertainment and gambling mecca. Scorsese will executive produce with Wahlberg and Leverage Management’s Stephen Levinson (Wahlberg and Levinson already executive produce Entourage and the upcoming drama In Treatment). The project is being developed in conjunction with the Nelson Johnson book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, which HBO has optioned. Scorsese previously visited Atlantic City in his 1986 movie The Color of Money.

Though his next two films—The Big Hit (1998) and The Corruptor (1999), costarring Chinese action superstar Chow Yun-Fat—were less than successful, Wahlberg returned with a bang in the acclaimed Three Kings (1999). The film costarred Wahlberg, George Clooney, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze as renegade U.S. servicemen in the Persian Gulf during the aftermath of the 1991 Gulf War conflict. In 2000, Wahlberg reteamed with Clooney (and Diane Lane) in The Perfect Storm, Wolfgang Petersen’s highly-touted film version of Sebastian Junger’s bestselling account of a boat full of swordfishermen caught in a killer storm in the North Atlantic.
