In McKinney's final season with the Lady Owls, Rice had a 24-9 overall record, won the WAC Tournament crown, and shared the WAC regular season title with Louisiana Tech after recording a 14-4 conference mark. McKinney was subsequently named WAC Coach of the Year. An 86-66 victory over Louisiana Tech in the conference tournament final sent Rice to its second ever NCAA Tournament appearance, with both occurring under McKinney's watch. Mark McKinney is excellent in a very demanding role. He nails every character, adopting a slight mannerism or contortion of the face to signal a change to a new personality. He creates a hysteria that is difficult to make sense of, regularly leaving the audience behind as he barges ahead to another upswing of action. His timing is near perfect, seamlessly blending vociferous demand and insult with pained calm and endurance. McKinney's virtuosity is very much the main reason to see the show.

The dictionary defines a leader as "one that goes ahead so as to show the way." This is an accurate description of the principal of Brodhead Elementary School, Mark McKinney. He is known to be hard working, fair, and consistently involved in helping each of his students receive the best education possible. He has worked in the Rockcastle County School system for more than 30 years. His staff calls him a farsighted person who plans ahead in order to help his faculty most effectively teach every student. He supported creating a site-based council at Brodhead Elementary, and initiated a cooperative special education model there in 1991, when the majority of other Kentucky schools still utilized a self-contained or resource room concept. He changed the philosophy of the school to ask teachers to focus on the idea that every child is gifted in some way, and that they should be taught the way they learn best.
