LYCOS RETRIEVER
Mark Martin: Races
built 635 days ago
Jimmie Johnson, last weekend's winner at Dover, DE, had his rear shocks confiscated by the France Family Henchmen NASCAR officials, along with Kyle Busch, Ryan Newman, Rusty Wallace, Mark Martin and Greg Biffle. The reason? Other drivers were complaining about the height of the cars' rear ends. While they all passed initial tech inspection, Johnson and Busch's cars failed the first time around until the shocks were given time to settle. Ironically, Busch made a comment to his crew chief about the height of Johnson's car during the race. Pot calling the kettle black, Kyle?

If Mark Martin does skip Bristol, it will end his streak of starting 621 consecutive races, dating to Nov. 22, 1987. The Arkansas native originally planned to drive 22 of the series' 36 races this year, with rookie Regan Smith driving the rest, but Martin since has added the second race at Daytona in July to make it 23.

Mark Martin made a valiant run and finished a strong sixth in what he believed to be his final Daytona 500. His performance was a mixed bag over the next 11 races. A solid top 5 would be tempered by a 30th-place showing. The team showed no consistency.

In 2005 Martin looked back at his career as a NASCAR driver and decided that it was time to retire. During his illustrious career Martin had won 35 NASCAR Cup races. Forty-seven times he’d made a victory lap in the NASCAR Bush series. Four times he’d finished second overall in the Nextel Cup Series. In addition to everything else Martin ... managed to bring home five separate International Race of Champions (IROC) wins. It seemed that the only thing Martin hadn’t accomplished was winning the NASCAR cup championship.
