Mark Martin will be named head of the driver development program at Ginn Racing this week, tutoring Ricky Carmichael, Regan Smith and Jesus Hernandez. Martin said the position wasn't part of his original deal to drive a partial schedule for Ginn.
On October 6, 2006, it was announced that Martin would instead split time with current Busch Series driver Regan Smith in the Ginn Racing #01 U.S. Army Chevrolet in 2007. Roush Racing announced that due to team limits imposed by NASCAR, they could not field a team for Martin for all 20 races he wanted to run in 2007, forcing Martin to move on, at least in the Nextel Cup Series. However, Martin drove two races for Roush Fenway Racing in the Busch Series, and ... drove in three races for Hendrick Motorsports, sharing the #5 with Kyle Busch.
That plan fell by the wayside when Mark decided he still wanted to run a part-time schedule. Roush couldn't accommodate those desires, so Mark moved to the Army car, where he relishes the role of player-coach to an up-and-coming driver. The Ginn operation won only twice during its 10 years as MB2. Mark could provide the spark to take the team to the next level.

Martin ended his partnership with Jack Roush following the 2006 campaign, leaving the team to run a part time schedule with Ginn Racing starting in 2007. Regan Smith drove the races Martin didn't participate in during the year. Also, Martin ran limited races in both the Craftsman Truck Series and the Nationwide Series'.
