Mark Hensby: Pga Tour
built 643 days ago
Greg Norman ... has been playing professionally almost as long as Mark Hensby has been alive. While that’s been going on he has been contributing: to junior golf; to his own tournament; inspiring kids to take up the game etc. OK, so his accent has moved a little, he has made a lot of money, he enjoys the trappings of his success. He is allowed to. He has left a legacy of amazing wins and equally amazing losses. The game is richer for his participation.

Hensby was in a battle for most of the round with Mike Weir and every time Weir looked like he was going to pull away then Hensby would respond to tie for the lead. It looked like Hensby had a chance to tie Weir for lead again on the 18th hole, but a poor bounce on Hensby's approach shot coupled with a wonderful recover shot by Weir left him in second place. The second place finish was quite important for Hensby because he came into the event in 151st place on the Money List and the second place check at the Fry's moved him up to 99th place, which will let him keep his Tour card for the 2008 season. He is scheduled to play next at the the Ginn sur Mer Classic at Tesoro, which is the next to last stop of this year's Tour.

Hensby, who injured a hip in a car accident at the start of last year, has battled to find his best on the US Tour in 2007. With a handful of tournaments remaining, he is one of several Australians outside the top 125 on the money list - the cut to retain playing rights.

Obviously perturbed by his final bogey, the Australian Hensby – who lives in nearby Mesa – left the course without talking to reporters. He entered the tournament 151st on the money list. He had the best round of the week at 61 on Friday.

Hensby earned his card for the 2008 season with a T-2 at last week's Fry's Electronics Open. He has been replaced in the field by Scott Gump, who has split time this year between the Nationwide and PGA Tours.

Pettersson faded and carded a 74 but a great nail-biting duel developed between Weir and Hensby which went to the wire. Knowing that he needed at least the runner-up spot to secure his card Hensby’s nerve held strong and shooting a solid 69 his second place took him from 151st to 99th and guaranteed full Tour exemption for 2008. Hensby was first to praise Mike Weir, whose win was his first in 87 starts. Hensby said “Mike deserved to win. He played great.”
