STANFORD (California): France’s Marion Bartoli is eager to prove her dream run to the Wimbledon final earlier this month was no fluke. Bartoli, 22, stunned third seed Jelena Jankovic and world number one Justine Henin at the All England Club before falling to Venus Williams in the final as she soared to a career-high 11th in the world rankings.

At the 2007 Wimbledon Championships Marion made her long-awaited Grand Slam breakthrough by advancing to her first ever Grand Slam final. Her most notable win in the early rounds was her victory over No. 3 seed Jelena Janković in the fourth round, the second-biggest win of her career to date. She came from a set down and fought several rain delays to win 3-6, 7-5, 6-3. Bartoli followed this by beating Michaëlla Krajicek 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 in the quarterfinals in another delayed match. After losing the first set Marion told BBC reporters she had an hour's nap in the 90 minute rain break (she claims she needs 10 hours sleep per night) and came back refreshed to take the final two sets and book a place in the semi final with her Eastbourne conqueror Henin. Bartoli advanced to the finals after coming from behind to stun No. 1 seed Henin 1-6, 7-5, 6-1.

Bartoli lost to Henin, 6-1, 6-1, at the Eastbourne tuneup and started in the same way again. However, she shed Centre Court debut nerves, defied the gusts, and began to shovel back everything Henin could hit to win, 1-6, 7-5, 6-1. Looking up at the Royal Box, Bartoli spotted her hero, James Bond. Well, actually actor Pierce Brosnan, who has played Bond from time to time.

Bartoli, 22, dazzled fans in recent days with pluckiness and pinpoint accuracy. She lost the first set in her previous three victories, including the one against Justine Henin in the semifinals by 6-1. Her two-handed strokes pounded the edges of the court, exhausting opponents as they chased the shots.

Two of the new entries today are rising French star Marion Bartoli, who reached the Wimbledon finals Saturday and catapulted in the rankings to No. 11, and Daniela Hantuchova (No. 12). Bartoli won three titles last year at Auckland, Tokyo and Quebec City and, during Wimbledon, she grabbed international attention with upsets of World No. 1 Justine Henin and defending champion Mauresmo en route to her first Grand Slam finals appearance. She has played the Pilot Pen three times with her best finish coming in 2006 when she reached the quarterfinals. Hantuchova is ... having a stellar 2007 as she won the second title of her career at Indian Wells and reached the semifinals of Doha, Rome and 's-Hertogenbosch. This will be her seventh appearance at the Pilot Pen with her best result coming in 2002 when she reached the semifinals.

To begin the match, Bartoli hardly looked like the French flash who toppled top-ranked Justine Henin on a soggy day at Wimbledon in the semifinals. Hunched at the shoulders and bent slightly at the waist, Bartoli looked like an elderly woman lugging a sack of potatoes up Lombard Street, rather than the world's 11th ranked player.
