Marion Bartoli: Indian Wells
built 639 days ago
Bartoli began 2004 by getting to her first WTA semi final in the season-opener in Auckland. She got to the second round of the Australian Open for the first time, losing to number 22 seed Patty Schnyder in three sets. Marion reached another semi final in Hydrabad which briefly made her a top 50 player for the first time, but simultaneously she refound her doubles form of late 2003. Partnering compatriot Émilie Loit, they reached the semi finals of Acapulco, the quarter finals of Indian Wells and then Marion won her first WTA tour doubles title in Casablanca.
Unlike most of the up-and-coming stars on the WTA Tour, Bartoli isn't blonde, tall and slender, but dark-haired, 5-foot-6 and, well, a little chubby. Her father used to bribe her with sweets when she was a youngster learning to hit targets with accurate tennis strokes in a converted gymnasium.

Well it might be tough to recall Bartoli's name in a year from now the way the French woman has played since Wimbledon. Her quirky two-handed game got her all the way to the finals at the AELTC, but the bounce couldn't quite take her all the way, and now Mrs. Bouncy seems to have taken a downward turn.
