In Australia at the beginning of the year, Bartoli made a bad start, playing only three matches, losing two of them. At the Medibank International in Sydney, Bartoli lost to Francesca Schiavone in the second round 2-6, 6-3, 6-2. At the Australian Open, Bartoli was the first top ten seed to fall, losing her opening round match to Sofia Arvidsson 6-7(3), 6-4, 6-3 after Bartoli was up a break in both the second and third sets. At the Tier II Open de Gaz in Paris, Marion made it to the semi-finals following easy wins over Virginie Razzano and Dominika Cibulkova. However, she suffered a back injury while 6-2, 2-1 up against Anna Chakvetadze. She played on through the pain for the Paris crowd but lost the next 11 games in a row, losing 2-6, 6-2, 6-0.

Marion has two cats, and her hobbies include painting, listening to music and going to the cinema. Among Marion’s favorite things are the color blue, roses, the movies Gladiator and A Beautiful Mind, the book Le Pianiste and her mother’s apple pie. Marion’s other sports interests include jet skiing, volleyball and basketball. Her most memorable tennis experiences have been winning the US Open juniors and winning her first WTA Tour Singles title in Auckland in January 2006. The other tennis players Marion most admires are Pete Sampras and Monica Seles.

After her somewhat disappointing U.S. Open performance, Marion began her indoor season at a small tournament in Kolkata, India. She was the number one seed but suffered a shock loss to Vania King, who immediately lost in the next round. She then played at the Fortis Championships in Luxembourg, where she reached her first semifinal since her Wimbledon run by beating defending champion Alyona Bondarenko and number one seed Anna Chakvetadze for her third top ten win of the year, but then was demolished by in-form Daniela Hantuchova. She then suffered a first round loss at Stuttgart to Agnieszka RadwaĆska, 0-6 6-2 6-1 on her 23rd birthday.

Dr. Bartoli enjoys playing chess. Marion‘s mother, Sophie, is a nurse who enjoys singing, and her brother, Franck, is a soccer fan and is currently in the French Army. The whole Bartoli family plays recreational tennis.

Irrespective of the outcome of Saturday's final, Bartoli won't be featured in the French national team next weekend that plays a Fed Cup semifinal against Italy. And the reason is at the root of why she is a controversial figure in the French tennis scene.
