Mario Party-e, Mario Party DS doesn't stray too far from the classic Mario Party formula. The game is built around Party mode, the traditional multiplayer board-game-on-a-screen that can be played by up to four players or as few as one, although it's probably Mario Party DS' least enjoyable single-player experience. As in each of the numbered Mario Party games, the players take turns bashing dice blocks to move around five fairly small but straightforward game boards in a quest for stars and coins. Along the way, they purchase and collect items and hexes that can be used to help themselves or hold back their opponents, and at the end of each turn, everyone dukes it out in one of over 70 frantic mini-games.

Party games live or die by the quality of the games on offer, and by most accounts, Mario Party DS throws so many at you that the duds are overshadowed by the number of mostly pretty fun ones. This time around, you'll be surfing on bars of soap, trying to stay afloat on rubber ducks, shooting pellets while running on a world globe, dancing under a spotlight, digging for your life, fishing, tracing, platforming and a host of other activities. A few ... make use of the microphone, but Nintendo wisely include the option to stick to non-mic games if you're feeling a little conspicuous.
