Mario Kart 64 (マリオカート64, Mario Kāto Rokujūyon) is the sequel to Super Mario Kart for the SNES. It features updated graphics, all-new courses, different characters and modified gameplay mechanics. Koopa Troopa and Donkey Kong Jr. from the original game were ditched and Donkey Kong and Wario were added to the pack. A number of items were introduced to the series for the first time, including the triple shells, string of bananas and the infamous Blue Shell that homes in on the race leader. The feather item was removed and has not been seen since. Mario Kart 64 moved the series into true 3D, even if the racers were still pre-rendered 2D sprites, and represented a huge technological leap forward from its predecessor.

Very fast, very fun, and very Mario, Super Mario Kart is a new racing game for the SNES. Players can choose from 8 different characters, including Mario, Princess Toadstool, Bowser, and Donkey Kong Jr. Players can challenge the computer, or they can challenge each other in a split screen two-player mode. A Grand Prix mode is included, as well as a battle mode where players are armed with Koopa shells and bannana peels. Many different tracks taken directly from the Mario Universe await players in this stunning title.

Super Mario Kart features the Mushroom Cup, Flower Cup, Star Cup in the three engine classes (50cc, 100cc, 150cc), and Special Cup in the 100cc and 150cc. 150cc mode must be unlocked by beating the 100cc cups first, while the player must clear each of the other cups to unlock the Special Cup. Each cup in this game holds five tracks for a total of twenty tracks in the game. It is the only Mario Kart game where Princess Peach is referred to as "Princess Toadstool" outside Japan, although she was only referred to as a "Princess" in the manual and in the game (this was fixed in the strategy guide), though later Mario Kart games call her "Peach" in all regional releases.

Like it's predecessors, the mainstay of Mario Kart DS is the Grand Prix mode, a series of cups with four races each where you'll race against CPU controlled opponents for points. With a total of eight cups, Grand Prix mode isn't terribly time consuming. Fortunately, there is much to do outside of this mode. The Mission mode is perhaps the most innovative aspect of DS. It features a series of objectives that must be completed in order to unlock the next series, amounting to a total of six series. Each series culminates in a boss battle very reminiscent of those found in Super Mario 64.

Mario has even started his own series of racing tournaments, starting with Super Mario Kart. Mario is an average weighted driver, making him very versatile and usable in many situations. Mario's stats are very similar to his brother, Luigi. His karts are usually based on his red color and have average stats like him. In Mario Kart Arcade GP, Mario had a new look to his [K]art. He raced with a couple other key Mario Kart characters, plus Pac-Man series characters.
