From January through October 2003, a group of individuals engaged in an in-depth discussion of the death of one of the 20th century's most beloved figures, Marilyn Monroe. The result is The DD Group, the highly detailed work of author David Marshall. It chronicles Monroe's final day and her tragic and puzzling demise. Using available information including police reports, vintage magazine and newspaper accounts, documentaries and biographies, and correspondence with some of the principals in the case, the group had one purpose--to reconstruct the events of Monroe's last summer and reach an understanding of what likely took place on August 4, 1962. By verifying sources, considering agendas, and, above all else, applying logic, the DD Group was able to weed through the conflicting and often contradictory reports. Through careful research and study, they arrived at the most comprehensive understanding of the events surrounding Monroe's disturbing death.

A one page typed letter in French to Marilyn regarding the 30th Gala De L'Union Des Artists in Paris signed by President Josephine Baker, dated March 4, 1960. Also present is a handwritten response to Baker regarding her unavailability for the event. In full: "My most sincere regrets unable to attend Gala de L'Union des Artists March 4 th since I will be working in film here. All best wishes for success your worthwhile benefit. The couple was divorced on January 24, 1961, and later that year Monroe entered a New York psychiatric clinic. After her brief hospitalization there she returned to the Fox studio to work on a film, but her erratic behavior betrayed severe emotional disturbance, and the studio discharged her in June 1962.

Financially strained by the production costs of Cleopatra, starring Elizabeth Taylor, Fox dropped Monroe from the film and replaced her with Lee Remick. However, co-star Dean Martin, who had a clause in his contract giving him an approval over his co-star, was unwilling to work with anyone but Monroe. She was rehired.[33]
