Video:Roslyn (Marilyn Monroe) berates Guido (Eli Wallach) after he offers, conditionally, to free the … In 1950 Monroe played a small uncredited role in The Asphalt Jungle that reaped a mountain of fan mail. An appearance in All About Eve (1950) won her another contract from Fox and much recognition. In a succession of movies, including Let's Make It Legal (1951), Love Nest (1951), Clash by Night (1952), and Niagara (1953), she advanced to star billing on the strength of her studio-fostered image as a “love goddess.” With performances in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), How to Marry a Millionaire (1953), and There's No Business Like Show Business (1954), her fame grew steadily and spread throughout the world, and she became the object of unprecedented popular adulation. In 1954 she married baseball star Joe DiMaggio, and the attendant publicity was enormous. With the end of their marriage less than a year later she began to grow discontented with her career.

By October of 1954, Marilyn announced her divorce from DiMaggio. The union lasted only eight months. In 1955 she was suspended by Fox for not reporting for work on How to Be Very, Very Popular (1955). It was her second suspension, the first being for not reporting for the production of "The Girl In Pink Tights". Both roles went to others. Her work was slowing down, due to her habit of being continually late to the set, her illnesses (whether real or imagined) and generally being unwilling to cooperate with her producers, directors, and fellow actors.

This being the world of Monroe enthusiasts, there is controversy, of course. Sight unseen, rival collectors already are questioning the caliber of the collection and whether Monroe actually wore some of the items displayed. And they are wondering aloud about the man behind the exhibit, Robert W. Otto, a 55-year-old Chicago collector. Otto, a low-key fellow with a polished spiel and the manner of a Midwestern grocery store manager, gave The Times a preview of the collection this week that included a visit to the "Joe and Marilyn Room," featuring items such as the nightgown Marilyn wore on the night of her wedding to DiMaggio as well as her wedding gloves and handbag.
It has been claimed that Monroe was involved with either Robert Kennedy, John F. Kennedy, or both.[33] Jeanne Carmen, who claims to have been a friend of Monroe's, has said she dated both, though she only loved Robert. Carmen ... believes at least one of the Kennedys was responsible for her death.[33] Joe DiMaggio told both his son and attorney that "the Kennedys killed her."[38]
Otto said he began collecting Marilyn memorabilia 37 years ago after he got into the business of collecting DiMaggio keepsakes. And if none of the other collectors have heard of him, Otto says, it's simply because he kept a "very low profile" and concentrated on courting those people who actually knew Monroe and acquiring items from them.
