One of the reasons Marilyn is so iconic is that she represents both the benefits and pitfalls of fame and glamour. Born Norma Jean Mortenson in 1926, she was shuttled between foster homes as a child before marrying at age 16. While working at a factory, she was spotted by a photographer who helped her start her modeling career. Soon after, she lightened her hair and had her nose slimmed. At age 20, she changed her name to Marilyn Monroe, and after a few bit parts, her movie career began to take off.

Every new blonde that appears, from Debbie Harry to Madonna, credits Marilyn Monroe with an influence on her career. There is no doubt that Monroe holds the title of the most famous woman of the twentieth century.

In 1962 Marilyn was chosen to star in Fox's Something's Got to Give (1962). Again, her absenteeism caused delay after delay in production, resulting in her being fired from the production in June of that year. It looked as though her career was finished. Studios just didn't want to take a chance on her because it would cost them thousands of dollars in delays. She was only 36.

Marilyn frequently turned up late for filming which caused endless disputes. Despite being mostly cast as a dumb blonde, in reality she was anything but dumb, being witty, intelligent and talented, but ... vulnerable and self-conscious. When her acting career was starting to take off some nude photos taken when she was struggling for work appeared in Playboy magazine.
