This LA Weekly article (January 12-18, 2001), by Greg Burk, is a very preceptive analysis of how Marilyn Manson built his own music empire. Burk looks beyond the Goth/Satanic imagery, the allusions to David Bowie, and the Columbine massacre, to explore the tactics and strategies that Manson has used to prosper in the music business. Highly recommended!

From his makeup to his music, there is nothing Marilyn Manson likes more than to shock. But behind the pose, has he really got anything to say - and why does he prefer living under Bush?

The recent Internet postings accusing rock musician Marilyn Manson of killing puppies, chickens or any other animal in concert are false. This has been confirmed by the ASPCA with his manager, and by recent attendance at his concert by a friend of the ASPCA. Call it an 'urban legend,' 'Internet myth' or plain old 'hoax,' it is simply not true. Intentional animal cruelty to a companion animal is a felony in at least 27 states and a misdemeanor in the rest. If anyone has any documented evidence or first-hand accounts of animal cruelty it should be reported to the local police or humane society in that town. Please pass this information along to other concerned animal lovers and anyone else spreading this rumor.
Entertaindom reported that Rocker Courtney Love has hit out at musical superstars Eminem, Britney Spears and Marilyn Manson. After making a surprise appearance as a special guest at the first Rockgirl Music Conference in Seattle last week, the Hole frontwoman held court for a 90-minute debate at the city's Renaissance Madison Hotel -- and let rip into the three singers. She described rapper Eminem as "the first totally post-modern artist," saying that "without context he's nothing -- without that endorsement from Dr. Dre, he's nothing." She said Manson does not sell that many records, "because it's not 1975." And then the "People vs. Larry Flynt" actress finally laid into Britney, saying the "Baby One More Time" pop princess was "like a Barbie." Love did manage one compliment... -- calling the man behind many of Britney's hits, Max Martin, a "genius."
Manson's first film role was in 1997, as a pornographic actor in David Lynch's Lost Highway. Since then he has appeared in a variety of minor roles and cameos, including Party Monster, based on the murder of Angel Melendez by Michael Alig; former love interest Rose McGowan's 1998 film Jawbreaker; Asia Argento's, 2004 film The Heart Is Deceitful Above All Things; Rise; and The Hire: Beat The Devil, the sixth installment in the BMW Films series. He appeared as himself in Michael Moore's political documentary Bowling for Columbine discussing the motivations of the perpetrators and allegations that his music was somehow a factor. He has appeared in animated form in Clone High and Family Guy (the Family Guy episode depicts Manson, but is not actually voiced by him) and participated in several episodes of the MTV series Celebrity Deathmatch; he often performed the voice for his claymated puppet, and contributed the song "Astonishing Panorama of the Endtimes" to the soundtrack album.

Nikki Sixx confirmed that the boundary-busting creative spirit of the first two albums has been maintained on this third episode of Bat Out of Hell. just making a great piece of music," he said. Added John 5: "The world knows that's he's an amazing talent. He's living those lyrics."
