Mariah Carey biography and filmography Mariah Carey was born in Long Island, New York on March 27, 1970. Her parents are Patricia Hickey (Irish-American) and Alfred Roy Carey (African-American/Venezuelan). Mariah attended Greenlawn's Harborfields High School. In June of 1990 Mariah made her debut with "Mariah Carey" which entered at #73, but on August 4 1990 it reached #1. She is the only artist since the Beatles and Elvis Presley to have so many #1 singles and albums. Along with numerous awards, she is the most successful selling female artist in music history and is the only female artist to have straight #1 singles and albums.
With a mother who shared both talent and a love of music, Mariah Carey was named after "They Call the Wind Mariah," a song from the popular Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon. She began singing at the age of four, and her extraordinary and innate talent quickly progressed. As a young teenager she began honing her songwriting skills; upon high school graduation, Carey headed straight to New York to pursue a musical career. A luminous talent, her vocals were immediately in demand. Her major break came while singing backup for Brenda K. Starr, who gave her demo tape to then-Sony Music Entertainment Chief Tommy Mottola. Soon after, Mottola signed Carey to her first recording contract with Columbia Records.

As part of her deal with Island/Def Jam, Mariah created the MonarC imprint to sign and develop new artists. Mariah has so far signed her good friend, Trey Lorenz, Bell & Nae Nae, and Sadie... known mysteriously as "Dat Baby". However, the future of the label is in jeopardy, and the label may be inactive.
Mariah Carey received the following nomination for the 29th NAACP Awards: Outstanding Female Artist. The awards were taped on February 14th in Los Angeles. The show aired later in February on FOX.
After EMI parted ways with Mariah Carey, CEO Alain Levy begins an arduous cleanup in the hopes of snapping EMI out of its North American doldrums. A shocker is that EMI will move its Virgin subsidiary from its LA home to NYC. Get story here.
