Mariah Carey: Tommy Mottola
built 124 days ago
Mariah Carey was waitressing to make ends meet while passing her demo tape to anyone who would listen. Then, at an industry party, Sony music executive Tommy Mottola intercepted her tape and retired to his car to give it a listen. Impressed, he returned to the party, but Mariah - echoing Cinderella - had vanished.

Carey and Mottola separated in 1997; Although Mariah had often projected the image of a happy marriage to the public, in reality, she had felt emotionally and psychologically abused by Tommy. He was often described as possessive even to the point of spying on Mariah when she had friends over, and telling their live in servants not to look at her in the eye to intimidate her. Their divorce became final the following year.

Mottola, who is two decades her senior and was married to someone else when they met, supervised Carey's intense marketing push. Despite the dicey beginnings, once they married, she and Mottola seemed to settle quietly into the virtual palace they'd built in suburban Bedford, New York. Then last May, following month of speculation (and an official denial just a day earlier), the couple announced their separation, and Carey tentatively began to extricate herself from the chaste, safe image that some say Mottola had perpetuated.

On June 5, 1993, Mariah donned a puffy-sleeved Vera Wang gown and wed Tommy in a lavish ceremony based on the wedding of Prince Charles and Princess Diana. Grammy awards and hit singles would follow, but personal happiness continued to elude her.
