Margaret Thatcher: Iron Lady
built 645 days ago
Thatcher marked her 80th birthday with a party at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in Hyde Park on 13 October 2005, where the guests included Queen Elizabeth II, The Duke of Edinburgh, and Princess Alexandra, The Honourable Lady Ogilvy. There, Geoffrey Howe, now Lord Howe of Aberavon, commented on her political career: "Her real triumph was to have transformed not just one party but two, so that when Labour did eventually return, the great bulk of Thatcherism was accepted as irreversible."

With her forceful personality and trademark bouffant hairdo, Thatcher dominated British politics for much of the following decade. Her hard-driving style earned her the nickname "Iron Lady", and she remains one of Britain's most contentious political figures, revered by the Conservative faithful and despised by the Left.

Last night, BBC4 aired Michael Portillo's documentary Portillo on Thatcher: The Lady's Not For Spurning. When it comes to the downfall of Thatcher herself, he repeats the same old line: she stayed on too long. Which is of course true, but only for her. A leader is not bound by any time limits, at least in Britain.
