Though she gives her children credit for choosing WIS for their high school education, Margaret herself wanted her children to have a bilingual experience. For Colin, too, the School’s mission made sense – he grew up in a multicultural environment, in Brazil, where he went to British and Brazilian schools before returning to England for university.

After getting engaged, the couple were separated for two years when Colin was called up to serve in the Air Force. They married on his return when Margaret was 18 and Colin was 20. Their first child was born when Margaret was 21.

Colin plays Kit Markham, a never-married author of critically acclaimed but modestly selling books. Her foil is Mildred Watson Drake, played by Harris, a divorcee whose more lightweight novels sell much better. Though the two grew up together, their relationship has grown brittle. They spar over Markham's younger lover, how Drake's daughter should be raised and if the glue that once bound them still sticks.
