built 479 days ago
After storms and rain pounded Florida, which delayed play in Delray Beach, Mark and Mardy Fish were finally able to play their first round match. After a slow start, they were able to win a tight 2nd set, and clinched the win in the CTB. They defeated the #3 seeds Butorac/Perry 1-6, 7-5, 10-5.

Perhaps Fish’s grandest effort came in the Davis Cup World Group Playoff in Bratislava, Slovakia, where Fish saved the U.S. team from almost certain defeat. With the United States trailing Slovakia 0-1 in the best-of-five match series, Fish came back from losing the first set, his opponent, Karol Kucera, serving for both the second and third sets, and a 30-minute “blackout” in the arena with Fish serving at a tenuous situation at 5-5, deuce in the second set. Fish won the “must-win” match in four courageous sets, saving the U.S. Davis Cup team from the almost insurmountable 0-2 deficit in a match that it eventually won by a 3-2 margin.

Rafa went up an early break in the second set as Fish's serving cost him.Two double faults in a row from the American aided Rafa to take a 2-0 lead. Some great serving from Rafa, including a game where he served three aces to hold to lovee saw Rafa go up 4-1. He then broke the American again as Fish netted and he served out the match with just a slight wobble, saving a break point before winning it on his first match point as Fish couldn't return another powerful serve.

The Bryans won a tight match against Mark and Mardy in the semifinals at the International Tennis Championships in Delray Beach, with a score of 7-5, 4-6, 10-5. The first set started off well as Mark and Mardy broke Mike Bryan's serve to go up 3-2. But the Bryans broke right back and then broke again at 6-5 to take the set. The 2nd set was just as competitive and Mark and Mardy broke Bob Bryan's serve late in the set, and then served it out to take it 6-4. In the CTB, Mark and Mardy had an early minibreak to go up 2-0, but then the Bryans took command and never looked back. It was a great match!

Fish fell to Jarkko Nieminen in the third round of the Australian Open after a code violation caused him to lose his composure. Chair umpire Damian Steiner of Argentina believed Fish attempted to hit a linesman with a ball early in the third set. While Fish attempted to downplay the incident afterwards, he reacted to the violation by berating the chair umpire and was clearly frustrated while only winning three more games during the rest of the match.

Throw in 10 aces and 25 winners and you get an idea of what Fish was up against. Roddick lost just three points off his first serve for the match and 14 points off his serve altogether.
