Wear tennis shoes (preferably water-proof and thick soled for walks to and from the car and up and down the parade route) and jeans but costumes of any kind are preferred! Check the weather forecast. Weather can change quickly in New Orleans, so you might want to layer your clothes.

Louis Satchmo Armstrong Mardi Gras Float Mardi Gras will go on in New Orleans in 2006, but there will be fewer parades than usual. The cash-strapped city will allow 8 days of parades, and ... announced that they are considering corporate sponsorships as a way to defray costs. The plan will have parades rolling on the weekend of February 18th & 19th, and then Thursday, February 23rd through Mardi Gras Day (Tuesday, February 28th). See press release from Mayor's office.

Mardi Gras Party Store When French-Canadian explorer Pierre Le Moyne, Sieur d’Iberville, landed on a plot of ground about 70 miles down river from the present location of New Orleans on Mardi Gras, Mar. 3, 1699, he christened it Pointe du Mardi Gras. Iberville’s expedition went on to establish settlements at Biloxi Bay (Mississippi) and Fort Louis de la Louisiane (Alabama), located on the Mobile River a few miles upstream from the present site of the city of Mobile. (Mobile, which calls itself the Mother of Mystics, traces its Carnival tradition to 1704, when Nicholas Langlois founded Societe de Saint Louis, a prototype of the secret societies, or krewes, that would later institutionalize Carnival in New Orleans.)
Mardi Gras 2008 performers have opened for the likes of Dave Matthews, Hootie and the Blowfish and George Clinton and have ... appeared on the Tonight Show with Jay Leno. Bands like Soul Project were forced to relocate after the Hurricane and have created an enormous "old school soul" following on the east coast. Rockin' Jake was named "Best Blues Har-monica" at the "Best of the Beat" New Orleans music awards.

In the United States, Mardi Gras draws millions of fun-seekers to New Orleans every year. Mardi Gras has been celebrated in New Orleans on a grand scale, with masked balls and colorful parades, since French settlers arrived in the early 1700s. Hidden behind masks, people behaved so raucously that for decades in the early 19th century masks were deemed illegal in that party-loving city.
