Over the years, the Bobcat Marching Band has established a national reputation for marching and playing excellence. This reputation has led to performances at two Presidential Inaugurations as well as appearances in a major Hollywood film and the 1995 video “Best of College Bands.” They are ... the first American marching band to have performed for a soccer game in Mexico. In March 2007, the Bobcat Marching Band was featured on video at the College Band Directors National Association (CBDNA) National Convention in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Honda Battle of the Bands is an annual marching band exhibition which features performances by HBCU bands. Seemingly contradictory to the name, Honda's "battle" is not a competition in the traditional sense; that is, no winner is crowned during the event. Rather, the bands compete for the favor of the audience, each other, and the greater community.

Evans' beliefs on effective marching bands are simple: "Improve in playing and marching with each performance. Toes straight ahead. Move straight forward and straight up. Be conscious of posture. You can't walk around on campus one way and then come to practice and walk another way. And keep practicing."

A marching band is typically led by one or more drum majors, who are called field commanders in some ensembles. They are ... led by other student leaders that can include field lieutenants, and captains of other sections like brass, drumline, and woodwinds. The drum major often conducts the band, sometimes using a large baton or mace. In many school bands, the drum major is the student leader of the band, followed by students within the band that lead a section, squad, letter, row, etc. Bands may also be led by a more traditional conductor, especially during field shows, where a stationary conductor on a ladder or platform may be visible throughout the performance. Usually clapping or a whistle is used to issue commands.

Field marching bands of today, are as much about pizzazz and performance as football teams are about hard hits and graceful passing. And simply because they might play at half-time, doesn't mean they exist solely for the football team. Today's marching bands are competitive entities unto themselves.
