Marat Safin: Australian Open
built 612 days ago
Marat Safin, the 2001 U.S. Open winner... advanced in early action a day after there was pretty much a total washout at the year's last Grand Slam tournament. Light rain and mist through most of Tuesday made it the first day at the U.S. Open with zero matches completed since Day 1 in 1987.

The other past US Open champion, Marat Safin (25) lost his second round match against world number 49 Stanislas Wawrinka. It was a comfortable win for Wawrinka, 6-3, 6-3, 6-3. Safin said afterwards this was a match that no matter what he tried he just could not get into it. Wawrinka played consistent tennis throughout the match and selected the right shot to go for the winners. Next up Wawrinka plays Robby Ginepri.

Safin held the No. 1 ATP ranking for 9 weeks during 2000. In that year, he won his first Grand Slam tournament at the US Open, by defeating (then) 4-time US Open winner and (eventual) 14-time Grand Slam tournament winner Pete Sampras in straight sets. Sampras praised him as "the tennis of the future."[4] Tennis experts immediately hailed Safin as the new star who would dominate tennis in future years. However, Safin failed to live up to this hype. He suffered a succession of injuries which affected his game and, in 2003, resulted in his missing the majority of the season.[8]

After going a set down Safin came out firing and looking like the player that won the Australian Open in 2005 levelled the match at one set all. Around this time there was a slight rain delay as light rain fell before the roof could be fully closed.

Marat Safin built a big lead against fourth-seeded David Nalbandian, let it all slip away, then held on to win in a fifth-set tiebreaker. A U.S. Open champion at age 20 back in 2000, Safin now is unseeded _ undaunted.
