Mansfield Town fans will be hoping that 2008 brings a change in fortunes as they leave 2007 rooted in the relegation positions in League Two. However, the Stags are already making some progress toward safety.
Mansfield Town have only once won what now is called League Two in 1975. Before the start of the season, Stags' boss Dave Smith made two significant signings by signing Ray Clarke and Gordon Hodgeson. Clarke proved to be an instant hit with the Mansfield faithful after finishing the season on 30 goals.

Like many football clubs, Stags can trace their origins to a local church, in this case the Wesleyan church on Bridge Street. The present name was adopted by the club in the summer of 1910. This move angered local rivals Mansfield Mechanics, but the name change went ahead nonetheless.
Hereford United fell to heavy 4-1 defeat away from home against Mansfield Town on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls were never at the races once the home side had taken the lead, as the Mansfield side scored twice in each half. The loss has seen Hereford drop down to a still respectable 11th place in their first season back in the Football League, while Mansfield have climbed to just one place below Hereford after their second home win of the season.
Mansfield has its own school department consisting of five schools, governed by a superintendent of schools whose office is located directly adjacent to the town hall. (Coincidentally, the school department building was once the town hall, and the town hall was once the high school.) There are three elementary schools: the Roland Green Preschool, the Everett J. Robinson Elementary School (serving grades K-2), the Jordan-Jackson Elementary School (serving grades 3-5), the Harold L. Qualters Middle School (serving grades 6-8), and Mansfield High School. Mansfield's teams are nicknamed the Hornets, and their colors are green and white. In recent years, MHS has had successful sports teams, especially the football and running teams.
