Manic Depression: Families
built 614 days ago
Manic depression symptoms can vary widely. They may include feelings of elation that are not appropriate for the occasion, sleeplessness, grandiose ideas, speaking faster and faster, racing thoughts, inappropriate sexual desires, too much energy, and inappropriate social behavior. These can result in poor judgment, which leads to poor choices. Studies have been done that show that members of each generation in a family will inherit the disease, so it is a genetic condition. However, many family members will not be affected by the disorder. Stress in the environment tends to exacerbate the illness.

Manic depression is likely to run in families and, in some cases, is believed to be hereditary. Family history of substance abuse ... increases the risk of developing manic depression. Researchers are still seeking to identify a gene (or genes) that may be responsible for this disorder.

Professor Ian Hickie is the Psychiatrist and Clinical Advisor to beyondblue and points out that manic depression is a medical illness. "It's a medical illness, it runs strongly in families (and) it has biochemical effects within the brain," he explains, before adding, "It's often the interaction of that brain chemistry with other environmental circumstances that matters."

If you become manic or depressed, you may temporarily not be able to look after your children properly. Your partner, or another family member, will need to organise the children's care while you are unwell. It can be helpful to make plans for this in advance when you are well.
