Maniac Mansion: Games
built 277 days ago
Because of its PC roots, Maniac Mansion has got to be one of the most open, free-roaming NES games ever released. That's great, but if you aren't expecting this ahead of time, you might spend hours trying to crack a puzzle that you can't possibly solve due to the party you picked. There's always a workaround, but if you don't know to look for one, you may never find it. Additionally, this was before LucasArts pioneered their "you can not get stuck or die in our games" policy, making this one of the few console games in which you can find yourself in a no-win situation. There are actually quite a few boneheaded things you can do to cause this, but the most obvious method is to accidentally kill one of your kids. You can still beat the game with only two teens, but if the dearly departed was carrying an item you need, then you're out of luck. If the game was to somehow let you know this, and force you to restart or load a saved game, that would be fine.

The Maniac Mansion game engine, known as SCUMM (Script Creation Utility for Maniac Mansion) revolutionized the adventure genre, by allowing the player to navigate and explore the environment by simply clicking. The engine would be used by LucasArts for more than 10 years.

Maniac Mansion is a sentence-based puzzle game that was originally on the PC but wound up on the Famicom and eventually the NES. You start out by choosing a group of Dave (Sandy's boyfriend. Leader of the rescue) and two of the following: Bernard (Geek Award Winner and Physics Club President), Michael (Ace Photographer for the College Newspaper), Razor (Leader of the Band Razor and the Scummettes), Jeff (Lives on the Beach, Answers to "Surfer Dude"), Syd (Aspiring Musician who Wants to Start his own Band), and Wendy (Waiting for her Big First Break as a Novelist). You wander the mansion by using the D pad and clicking where you want to go. You can interact with most of the things that you see through the set of Actions at the bottom. For example, if you click on "Pull" and then click on "Doormat", you will "pull" the "doormat". The choices are endless.

Maniac Mansion wasn't a hit just because it was easy to play. It featured many new gameplay elements, that would become the basis of most modern videogames. Maniac Mansion features 7 playable characters, a concept that was very new at the time. From this group of 7 characters (all of which have different abilities and personalities), the player creates a team of 3 to raid the mansion. By using the strengths of the members of the team, the player progresses through the story. The games features multiple endings (which would become common in more modern games) and a plethora of secrets.

Maniac Mansion is a unique blend of the zaniness of a sci-fi computer game, the droll and referential humour of SCTV and the Second City, and the warmth of a traditional sitcom about a loving extended family. It is perhaps best summed up in "Luck Be a Lady This Season" (2-1) (written by David Flaherty, John Hemphill, Michael Short). When Ike and Turner bring Fred a copy of a Maniac Mansion script that they wrote, he says:
