The 3rd album, Mandy Moore, appeared in June, 2001. Reviews were mostly positive, but sales were poor. The album debuted at #35 on the album chart and sold only about half as many copies as her first album.

Mandy Moore's musical style abruptly changed direction in 2003. Working with producer John Fields, she put together a collection of cover versions of songs by some of the top pop songwriters of the 70's and 80's. The album had a distinctively adult sound to it. Unfortunately, despite a peak at #14 on the album chart, sales were poor and, following the release of a Greatest Hits album, Epic Records dropped Mandy Moore from their artist roster.

Mandy was offered the chance to make a full demo while she was recording a theme song for a TV pilot. After considering offers, Moore signed a contract with Sony Music. She was just 15 when her first album "So Real" was released. Moore's first tour was with Backstreet Boys.

Due to low sales for Coverage, Sony's Epic Records dropped Moore. The company released the hits compilation album The Best of Mandy Moore, which reached number 148 on the Billboard 200,[35] in November 2004 as a final obligation to Moore's contract.[36] Another compilation, Candy, followed in 2005. During this time period, the only music Moore had recorded was a song demo, "Hey!", written by James Renald, and a cover version of Lori McKenna's "Beautiful Man", which was posted to her MySpace.
