A supply chain management consultant's role involves selling ideas, initially to the team with which they're working, but ... ultimately to an organisation's leadership. This has to be done through the use of well structured and rational arguments based upon hard data to present a compelling business case which will convince an organisation's leadership to adopt the team's proposals. In fact, the role involves being able to interact successfully with a wide variety of individuals, disciplines, customers and suppliers throughout clients' extended supply chains.
It is difficult to explain what a management consultant does. There are some on-the-floor observations of what the client company does. There is interviewing of some people who work for the client. There is use of computers and installing new programs. The consultant recommends changes and try to implement them. The consultant seems to have to create his own work.
No specific academic requirements exist for management consultants, but nearly all employers require at least a college degree in a related field. Employers generally prefer candidates who majored in one of the following areas: business, economics, statistics, mathematics, computer science, and logic. An Ivy League education is a distinct plus, and many employers look extremely favorably on MBAs, which are necessary requirements for upward mobility in this profession. Very little guidance is available, so candidates should demonstrate academic, work, or entrepreneurial experience that shows them to be self-starters and interested in excellence in whatever they do. Most major employers run their own programs to train junior consultants in accounting, internal policy, research techniques, and how to work as part of a close-knit, hardworking team. Experience is always valuable, but professional certification—granted by the Institute of Management Consultants USA, Inc. only after rigorous review—is often more important when it comes to getting hired and promoted, especially at smaller firms.
Management consultants study the methods, techniques and principles that guide a business to achieve its objectives. Management consultants work independently and are approached by businesses to advise them on matters relating to general management, strategy, personnel, finance, marketing, sales, production and public relations. Management consultants investigate problems or opportunities, offer suggestions and conceive action plans to be followed.
