The Maltese is a toy dog with a compact build and an overall appearance that denotes vigor, eagerness, and affection. The height from the dog’s withers to the ground is equal to the length from the dog’s withers to the tail. They have sloped shoulder blades and well-knit elbows that are held close to the body. Their chest is comparatively deep and their loins are sturdy, taut, and feature a slight tuck-up underneath. The neck of the Maltese is long enough to enable a high head carriage. The breed’s back is level and the ribs are well-sprung.
The Maltese is a hardy little companion dog with a luxurious silky white coat hanging straight to the ground on each side of a center part line. The coat is single, with no undercoat, and should not be wavy, curly or kinky. It should be made of shiny, thick, heavy hair which is about 8½ inches (22cm.) long. The color is pure white, although light ivory is acceptable. The long pendant ears and tail are thickly covered with hair and the tail drapes over the back. The eyes aredark, round, large and deep with dark rims. The muzzle tapers slightly and should be one-third the length of the total head.
There are few limits to the activities you and your Maltese can share. Maltese are popular show dogs, and they have done very well in obedience trials. A number of Maltese have earned Canine Good Citizen certificates offered through the American Kennel Club, and the breed has ... proven well suited for agility trials. In fact, Maltese are usually ringside favorites because their enthusiastic attitude is out of all proportion to their size.
Remember that reputable Maltese breeders will always require you to answer specific questions ranging from asking you to explain why you would want aMaltese puppy to requesting you to provide a veterinary reference if you already have pets. A reputable Maltese breeder doesn't just sell their Maltese puppies to the first interested buyer! Read more information on how to choose aMaltese dog breeder.

The Maltese is blessed with a hardy constitution, and even though this breed is small, it does not have to be treated like Dresden china. Naturally the Maltese is not a dog for infants, but children old enough to understand how a little dog should be treated will love the sparkling personality of the Maltese, who, in turn, adores gentle children.

An inexpensive stand dryer that works well for many people is one called the Ducky (you can purchase this dryer from many of the Dog Mailorder Catalogs). This dryer will sit on a table or counter and allow the use of one hand to brush the Maltese hair and the other hand to keep your Maltese out of danger. Use only the medium heat setting of your dryer. Using high heat can cause the coat the break more readily. As you direct the heat from the dryer of the coat use a long firm grooming stroke.
