Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands with 554 km of coastline. Mallorca's landscape is very varied, due to it's geological formation. The first thing which attracts your attention is the Tramuntana Mountain range, formed by a line of mountains running parallel to the north west coast, the highest of which is Puig Major. The mountains give way to a coastline of tiny villages, sand, pebble and rock beaches. Each in turn surrounded by the imposing mountain range. The mountains are the source of the island's fresh water which courses down to the islands growing regions where orange, clementine and lemon trees grow.

Majorca (Spanish and Catalan: Mallorca) is the largest island of Spain. It is located in the Mediterranean Sea and part of the Balearic Islands archipelago (Catalan: Illes Balears, Spanish: Islas Baleares). Like the other Balearic Islands, Ibiza (Catalan: Eivissa), Formentera, and Minorca (Catalan/Spanish: Menorca), the island is a popular tourist destination. Mallorca has some spectacular caves at various locations around the island. Probably the most spectacular are the Caves of Drach (Coves del Drach) at Portocristo. Today they represent one of the island's top attractions in which four spectacular chambers with thousands of stalactites are made even more impressive by the top quality lighting arrangements. A mini concert takes place on one of the underground lakes and visitors can take a boat ride steered by a gondolier at the end of the visit. Since the onset of mass tourism in the 1960's, Mallorca has without doubt, been one of the most popular holiday destinations for all nationalities, offering a wide range of attractions to suit all tastes. As a generalisation, the resorts on the islands south coast are the more lively and perhaps more suited for groups of young singles, or those seeking an active nightlife.

Startup Swiss low cost carrier Helvetic, an outgrowth of charter carrier Odette Airways, launched service last week from Zurich to Brussels and Malaga in a phased expansion that will see Palma de Mallorca come online Jan. 23 2004. By the end of Feb., Zurich-based Helvetic expects to add Nice, Marseille, Venice and Prague. Rome Ciampino and Naples will join the lineup March 28, boosting the carrier's network to 12 routes. Expansion is tied to a fleet of 11 F100s acquired from American Airlines that will be coming online gradually to year end. Helvetic started operations Nov. 28 2004 with one F100 and flights to Vienna, Alicante, and Valencia.

With its impressive yacht marina, many trendy bars and stylish restaurants and shops, it's not surprising that Palma has always been the traditional haunt of royalty and celebrities. Today it is also a short-break city destination outside of the main summer season. There are lots of places to visit in Palma most of which can be easily explored on foot.
