Mali is a presidential representative democratic republic, whereby the President of Mali is both head of state and head of government, and of a pluriform multi-party system. Executive power is exercised by the government. Legislative power is vested in both the government and the National Assembly of Mali. The Judiciary is independent of the executive and the legislature.

On September 19, 1997, the Government of the United States and the Government of the Republic of Mali signed an agreement that continued without interruption the import restriction placed on the same archaeological material. On September 19, 2002, the Government of the United States and the Government of the Republic of Mali extended the agreement for five years.
