Male Sexuality

Student instructors for the "Male Sexuality" class were adamant in defense of the course's content. In a letter to the Daily Cal, Drew Navarro, a "facilitator for the Male Sexuality class for the last five semesters," insisted that he and the course's other instructors had done nothing wrong. "The Daily Cal horribly mischaracterized the truth," course instructor Ian Bach told Campus Report.

[One] student, Jessica McMahon, told the Daily Californian that a group of students in the male sexuality class chose as their final project a trip to a gay strip club. Students watched instructors strip and have sex, the newspaper reported.

Male sexuality is under attack. The liberation of the sixties heightened the sexual contradictions of the typical Western male view of sexuality. The Feminist critique has shaken the foundations. Gay liberation has raised profound questions about sex roles and behaviors. AIDS makes you wonder if there is any future in it at all.

Lehman examines representations of the male body and male sexuality in a variety of settings and through many different lenses. Among the films he analyzes are Howard Hawks’s Rio Bravo and Rio Lobo; Scarlet Street; feral child films The Wild Child, Kaspar House, and Greystoke; and Nagisa Oshima’s In the Realm of the Senses. In these works, Lehman explores the symbolic enculturation of males, assumptions about power and the male body, and the ways that men’s and women’s bodies are marked differently with regard to scarring, wounding, and aging. In addition to film, Lehman ... considers such varied material as Jim Thompson’s noir novel The Nothing Man, sexology and medical representations of male sexuality, the video Dick Talk, penis jokes in Hollywood films of the 1970s and 1980s, and popular music by Roy Orbison. This edition of Running Scared also includes a new chapter on male nudity in the films of the 1990s, adding fresh analysis to this classic text. An updated preface situates the book within the current critical climate.
By the 1980s, there was "a new paradigm, a swing toward the medicalization of male sexuality," from which emerged Viagra, "the fastest selling pharmaceutical in history." At first pitched to respectable middle-aged couples, it became a party drug for the young. The jury is still out on whether Viagra has been a boon or bane for women. McLaren fiercely critiques corporate collusion with government, as in the freeing in 1997 of American pharmaceutical companies to advertise directly to consumers, which has escalated the demand for "lifestyle" drugs. Furthermore, most insurance companies paid for Viagra prescriptions, whereas women for 40 years had been denied coverage for oral contraceptives.

This dissertation considers, from a feminist perspective, the relationship between paedophilia and the social construction of male sexuality, including individual and social psychological aspects. It is argued that masculinity exists in opposition to femininity, and the boundaries maintained by perpetual reenactment and by hostility toward the other. The construction of masculinity is examined from both historical and modern perspectives. These include the power of the father in Christian tradition; Enlightenment discourses and modern debates; the historical constitution of the notion of the individual as both embodied and male; and the privileging of reason over emotion. This last encourages emotional constriction which disables the formation of empathic capacity. Central to masculinity is a particular form of sexuality which connects power, conquest and performance.
