During most of his career Malcolm X gave whites no such break. Instead he demanded separation from whites. He regarded integration not as a goal, but as a sentimental fiction. Toward the end of his life, he seemed more accepting of some whites, but his evolving vision was not entirely clear.
This book, published in 1965, originated from interviews with Malcolm X conducted by Alex Haley and published in the May 1963 issue of Playboy Magazine. Malcolm X and Haley spent over a year and a half together talking about Malcolm’s life. Haley left scraps of paper lying around the interview room, so that Malcolm could scribble down thoughts and ideas as they came to him. The major breakthrough between Haley and Malcolm came through discussing Malcolm’s mother. This allowed the men to overcome some of the barriers between them and allowed the story to take shape and grow.
On March 20, 1964, Life published a photograph of Malcolm holding an M1 Carbine and pulling back the curtains to peer out of the window of his family's home. The photo was taken in connection with Malcolm's declaration that he would defend himself from the daily death threats which he and his family were receiving. Undercover FBI informants warned officials that he had been marked for assassination.
Have group members work together to answer the questions on their activity sheet, including writing a one-to-two-paragraph summary describing what they believe defined Malcolm X’s personality during this period in his life. Students should include the following information in their summaries:
