Malaysia: Services

The Government of Malaysia (GOM) encourages foreign direct investment (FDI) by providing a number of incentives, particularly in export-oriented high-tech industries and "back office" service operations. The GOM ... hosts international trade shows and advertises broadly to attract FDI. Many U.S. companies have operations in Malaysia, including Intel, Microsoft, Dell, GE, UPS, Mattel, and Motorola, just to name a few.

Yang Amat Gatal - Abdul Fatah The only satellite TV in Malaysia that even Malays living next to swamps can afford. Service sucks and it doesn't have dedicated porn channels. A nice innocent message, "Service is unavailable" pops up when it rains or when Badawi did something stupid, followed by screams from disgruntled customers. It has over one million channels but the only ones that work are cartoons, Malay soap operas, and "The Boring-Stuff-No-One-Wants-To-Watch Show: Starring Kopi Tandas"
The government no longer seeks to entice labor-intensive companies to establish operations in Malaysia, and reserves its fiscal incentives for higher value-added projects. At the end of June 2006, total registered foreign workers numbered 1.84 million -- a 13.6% increase over 2005. They were employed in the following sectors: 33.3% in manufacturing sector, 20.2% in plantations, 25.9% in services, and 15.1% in construction. The majority of the foreign workers are from Indonesia (64.7%), followed by Nepal (10.7%), India (7.4%), and Myanmar (5.2%). In July 2005, the government increased the levy on foreign workers in the services and plantation markets by 50%. The real rate of wage increases in the manufacturing sector was 0.8% in 2005 as compared to 1.9% in 2004.

Tipping is not customary in Malaysia. However, hotel porters and taxi drivers will appreciate a small tip if you have been provided with exemplary service. Most expensive restaurants, bars and hotels may indicate prices in the form of RM19++, meaning that sales tax (5%) and service charge (10%) will be added to the bill. Hotel tax of 5% may ... be added to this.
