The Malawi people are of Bantu origin with ethnic groups including Chewa, Nyanja, Yao, Tumbuka, Lomwe, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, Ngonde, Asian, and European. The diversity of Malawi’s people is reflected in the diversity of its cultural traditions. A spirit of cooperation prevails among the Malawians as family members share both work and resources.

Compared to its neighbors, the main roads in Malawi are in surprisingly good shape and travel times between major destinations should be reasonable. The volume of traffic is low and most people drive reasonably slowly. Road travel after dark is not advisable as road markings are poor to non-existent and not all cars have headlights.

Malawi derives its name from the Maravi, a Bantu people who first settled in the region some 600 years ago. The major ethnic groups today are the Chewa, Nyanja, Lomwe, Yao, Tumbuka, Sena, Tonga, Ngoni, and Ngonde (Nkonde). Each group speaks a Bantu language (see language, Related Languages).

One year ago, 15-year-old Mary (not her real name) lost both her parents to HIV-related illnesses.
