Maine Highlands
built 276 days ago
The Maine Highlands are a never-ending rock concert of outdoor and cultural activities. Try out some nerve shaking whitewater rafting on the Penobscot and Kennebec Rivers. Take a hike along a portion of the Appalachian Trail, which culminates on Mt. Katahdin. Hop on a mountain bike for a scenic ride down a flower-covered trail. Try your hand at ice climbing (a close cousin to rock climbing). However you choose to spend your vacation, you could not have made a better choice than the Pine Tree State!

The Maine Highlands region has been a vacation area since the late 1800’s. Bangor is a distinctly different New England city in its dual nature of an exciting city and a doorway to so much nature. Bangor embraces the arts in both display and sale, and history such as the Cole Land Transportation Museum. Winter activities in the Highlands include great skiing, ice fishing, and a significant snowmobile bent. The highest peak in Maine, the most park land area, fantastic year-round recreation…it’s here!
The Maine Highlands, at the center of the state, encompasses six distinct regions, Greater Bangor, Katahdin, Lincoln Lakes, SebasticookValley, and Southern Piscataquis County. The many Rivers, lakes, and streams offer many attractions from fishing, canoeing and white water rafting. Fishing is at its best in the Maine Highlands. Salmon, brook trout, Bass and perch, will reel you in for and extended stay. The mountains are a hikers dream, with many different terrains to choose from, the challenges never end. The Maine Highlands offer some of the best camping in America, in the Moosehead Lake and Katahdin Regions.
The Katahdin Moosehead region... known as the Maine Highlands, encompasses the center of the state and much of its forested wilderness. This is where visitors have a very good chance at spotting moose and deer, which are plentiful. A paradise for outdoorsmen, Katahdin-Moosehead is a four-season vacationland, offering plenty of places for hunting and fishing; rafting, canoeing, and kayaking on the Penobscot and Kennebec rivers; and snowmobiling, dog sledding, and snowshoeing. Among the natural highlights of the area are Mount Katahdin, Moosehead Lake, and the 200,000-acre Baxter State Park. The park has many mountains, notably the peaks comprising the Katahdin massif and the Traveler Range. The park – with about 200 miles of hiking trails -- was designed primarily for hiking, and vehicles have access to only a limited road system.
