In the beginning, Mai is a self-absorbed woman who only likes her prize money. She once worked as a card dealer on a ship-board casino, lost in life, until finding purpose with Yugi Mutou (Yugi Muto in the English anime) and his friends. After she meets them, she seems to start caring more for her friends and the deeper meanings of the game as her wins become empty to her later in the series. Mai first appears in the Duelist Kingdom arc of the manga. She lost the first duel she is seen participating in to Katsuya Jonouchi (Joey Wheeler in the English anime). In the actual tournament, she loses to Yugi.

Chiang Mai's nightlife scene is the most happening in the North, although still a far cry from Bangkok's. There are discos, karaoke bars, and live music everywhere. The busiest nightlife zones are near Tapae Gate, Loi Kroh Road and along Charoenrat Road on the eastern bank of the Ping River.

Mai has a number of cards in the Universal Fighting System card game, including a starter deck. Actress Misa Nishida ... released a cosplay homage video to her entitled, Queen of Fighters 2006. She also has several figurines, hardcast or otherwise, made in her image by Aizu Project, Max Factory, Daiki, and more.

Chiang Mai now has a new large air conditioned bus service. You can see these nice air conditioned white buses all over the major city routes. There are ... pedicabs called samlor; the 3-wheeled tuk-tuk; and the most popular, the songthaew.

Even though it hurts to leave her beloved one once again, Mai has decided to abandon the Lonely Wolves team. After finding out that Terry was in fact alive, the busty Mai and Yuri reunited after a long separation. They decide to team up once again, since they miss the fun times way back when the King of Fighters tournament was just beginning to grow. They ... decided to accept Kasumi along as well, but this left one gap in their four person team. The final member appeared soon enough, during an audition in Japan, where they saw a peculiar little girl named Hinako Shijou. Mai was so impressed with her skills, that she was taken in as the fourth team member.

Midway through 22 BBY, Shu Mai attempted to instigate the withdrawal of the planet Ansion from the Galactic Republic. After examining a detailed map of the galaxy which documented trade routes and alliances between planets, Mai deduced that by discreetly putting pressure on Ansion to secede, she could force dozens of planets to secede with them... giving the Commerce Guild a chance of capturing or purchasing the planets. Ansion was in itself an insignificant planet in the eyes of the Senate, as many of its population were nomads, and had it no real industry. However, if Ansion were to leave the Republic, so would several of its allies, and by extension, hundreds of worlds who had made pacts or treaties with Ansion's allies. Other than Mai and the Commerce Guild, very few had noticed that such a backwater planet as Ansion lay at the center of so many interlocking treaties. Shu Mai planned out the withdrawal with Ansionian Senator Mousul and several others, and although they wished to persuade the planet to secede through force, Shu Mai remembered the debacle that followed when the Trade Federation attempted something similar a decade earlier on the planet Naboo.
