Magneto
built 177 days ago
Magneto is a mutant, born with the superhuman power to control magnetism. He can control existing magnetic fields or generate them within himself. Magneto’s power seems limitless. He once lifted a cargo freighter weighing 30,000 tons 50 feet into the air from a distance of 300 feet away. He has, at times, manipulated other forms of energy that are part of the electro-magnetic spectrum. He has even been known to exhibit control over people by affecting the iron component in their blood.

Although Magneto's primary power is magnetism, he seems to have some ability to project or manipulate any form of energy that is related to magnetism. In the past he has fired a bolt of electricity, he has ... created enough intense heat to destroy a metal door. Heat, or infrared radiation, is part of the electromagnetic spectrum, which also includes visible light, radio waves, ultraviolet light, gamma-rays, and x-rays. Magneto may be able to project any of these. He has also been shown creating an anti-gravity field, and presumably does so whenever he levitates a non-magnetic object. Hence, Magneto may be living proof of the longsought Unified Field Theory that all forms of energy are related.

In recent years Magneto has set his sights significantly lower than world conquest; he seeks only a haven for mutantkind. He first attempted to make the orbital base known as Avalon such a haven but was opposed by the governments of the world and the X-Men. Later, in order to placate the powerful mutant, the world governments decided to give the master of magnetism the island nation of Genosha. Magneto ruled that nation for some time with the aid of many who had previously opposed him. Genosha was recently decimated by yet another rogue mutant, namely Cassandra Nova Xavier, Charles Xavier's previously unknown dead sister. Magneto and 16 million mutants who were gathered at Genosha were reported deceased.

In this issue, Magneto returns to Auschwitz, where he has an argument with Professor Xavier, accompanied by Amelia Voght. In the end, Xavier fails to dissuade him from his chosen course of action (the attempted domination of humankind). Before leaving Auschwitz, he takes handfuls of earth, which he takes back with him to Asteroid M.

With an army of mutants at his disposal following the deadly Legacy Virus being cured, Magneto declared war on mankind. Yet again, Magneto was opposed by the X-Men, and in the ensuing clash he was severely injured by Wolverine. Recuperating, Magneto was powerless to prevent Sentinels controlled by Xavier’s genetic twin Cassandra Nova from decimating the island. Magneto was again believed dead, and after a recording purported to contain his last words was found, mutant supremacist ideals became widespread in the mutant community, with some adoring him as a martyr of the mutant cause. Magneto seemingly returned with a vengeance, infiltrating the Xavier Institute as the mutant healer Xorn, co-opting the Special Class as his new Brotherhood, and launching an attack on Manhattan. Killing Jean Grey before being killed in turn by Wolverine, it was later revealed that this Magneto was an imposter.

Seeing that mutantkind was to be confronted with far more perilous times than ever before, Magneto began seeking allies in order to protect mutants from humanity. Towards this end he participated in the Acts of Vengeance alongside such established villains as Doctor Doom, Wizard and the Mandarin. He ... confronted Red Skull, an unrepentant Nazi war criminal, on whom Magneto took revenge by entombing him alive. He worked alongside the American intelligence agent Nick Fury as well as a number of Russian operatives in order to reestablish peace in the Savage Land. Tired of the constant state of strife Magneto built a second orbital base where he hoped to live a life of quiet seclusion. He was by this point a figurehead for the cause of mutanthood and was sought out by a number of new mutants calling themselves the Acolytes.
