Unfortunately, Madonna's relationship with volatile young actor Sean Penn led her to accept a role opposite him, both in real life as well as onscreen in Shanghai Surprise (1986). The retro-styled, George Harrison-produced debacle endured a brief and mercilessly lambasted life at the box office; Madonna's marriage to Penn didn't last much longer. Next up for the indefatigable entertainer was Who's That Girl? (1987), a stillborn, flimsy imitation of the Melanie Griffith/Jeff Daniels vehicle Something Wild, released just one year prior. Notable only for its hit title track, the ostensible homage to Howard Hawks starred a pained Griffin Dunne opposite a bubbly, impetuous Madonna, apparently performing in the style of her semi-controversial "Open Your Heart" video. Needless to say, their chemistry did little to ignite box-office fireworks.

By the early 1990s, Madonna's film career seemed to be stuck in something of a rut. After her early movies received great critical acclaim and healthy box-office receipts, her later films tended to misfire rather badly. In 1993, Madonna received her third 'Razzie' award6 for her role in the erotic thriller Body of Evidence (after having scooped the very unprestigious award for her earlier work on Shanghai Surprise and Who's That Girl?). Madonna would later pick up more 'Razzies' for The Next Best Thing in 2000, Worst Actress and Worst Screen Couple for Swept Away (2002) and a Worst Supporting Actress award for Die Another Day... in 2002. Embarrassingly, Madonna also claimed the Razzies' Worst Actress of the Century and All-Time Worst Actress awards. Which is, to be blunt, rather harsh.

Madonna gave birth to a son Rocco John Ritchie on August 11, 2000.CNN.com. "Madonna gives birth to boy," 2000-08-11. Retrieved 5 May 2006. On December 22,2000, Madonna married British director Guy Ritchie, whom she had met in 1999 through mutual friends Sting and his wife Trudie Styler. As of October 2006, she was residing in Wiltshire, England with Ritchie and her children. Madonna, who refers to herself simply as "Mrs. Ritchie" on her personal letterhead, has undergone a transformation from Material Girl to family woman, as she told '"Tatler": "I don't need to drive around in flashy cars and I don't need to show off.

While filming the music video for "Material Girl" in 1985, Madonna began dating actor Sean Penn and married him later that year. After filing and withdrawing divorce papers in December 1987, they separated on New Year's Eve of 1988 and were officially divorced in September 1989. Of her marriage to Penn, Madonna later told Tatler, "I was completely obsessed with my career and not ready to be generous in any shape or form."[137]
Madonna tijdens Live8 In 1987 begint Madonna aan haar eerste wereldtournee: de Who's That Girl World Tour 1987.
The showing of Madonna’s music videos on MTV (see Music Television), a cable television music channel, was a major factor in her tremendous success in the pop music scene over the next few years. Other successful albums include Like a Virgin (1984), True Blue (1986), Like a Prayer (1989), Bedtime Stories (1994), Ray of Light (1998), American Life (2003), and the disco-inspired Confessions on a Dance Floor (2005). Madonna has made several major concert tours, including the 1990 “Blonde Ambition” tour, the 1993 “Girlie Show” tour, the 2004 “Re-Invention” tour, and the 2006 “Confessions” tour. Her “Re-Invention” tour was notable for its use of political content and antiwar messages; observers noted that it was just one of the ways that Madonna was seeking to create a more serious and thoughtful image of herself than the one projected earlier in her career.
