Madonna released her ninth studio album, American Life, in April 2003. The lyrics were themed on the aspects of the American dream, fame, fortune and society. The record received mixed reviews.[88] The music video for the first single, "American Life", caused controversy, as it contained scenes depicting war, explosions, and blood. The day before the video was to air on European television, Madonna pulled it and released an edited version, which showed her singing in front of flags from around the world. The song peaked at #37 on the Billboard Hot 100.[50] Having sold four million copies,[89] American Life became the lowest selling album of her career.[90]

After working with various modern dance ensembles during the late 1970s, Madonna joined a tour with French singer Patrick Hernandez, primarily known for his 1978 song Born To Be Alive. It was at this time that she became involved with musician Dan Gilroy, who would later include her in the line-up to his band The Breakfast Club as a drummer and vocalist. By 1980 she had moved on to Emmy, a new project that ... involved Breakfast Club bandmate Stephen Bray, but soon afterwards the the pair split off to create more club-oriented music, their demo recordings quickly earning a following within the New York disco scene and attracting the interest of local producer Mark Kamins. It was Kamins who subsequently connected the singer with Sire Records, producing her debut solo single Everybody for the label in 1982 and setting her pop career in motion. Both the single and its follow-up Burning Up (1983) did well enough in the dance charts to convince Sire to release a full album, and in 1983 her eponymous release positioned Madonna in the top 10 in several different countries including the US, the UK, France and Australia.

Madonna is determined to get all she can out of her new collaborators Justin Timberlake and Timbaland - she’s working them around the clock. The pair are working on several tracks on the Material Girl’s forthcoming album in a London studio - and admit they thought they would have more free time to check out the sights in the British capital. Timbaland sighs, "We are working around the clock. Justin was meant to be out tonight but he’s too tired."

In March, 1989 Madonna released Like a Prayer, one of the most artistically accomplished albums of her career. Released in a hail of controversy over the video for the title song running afoul of both the Roman Catholic Church and Pepsi, the album topped the charts and included "Like a Prayer," and "Express Yourself," two of the biggest hits of Madonna's career. The success was somewhat tarnished by the end of Madonna's marriage to Sean Penn in September 1989.
