Seating in the present Madison Square Garden is arranged in six ascending levels. The first level, available for basketball games and concerts, but not for hockey games, is the "floor" or "court-side" seating. Next above this is the loge seating, followed by the 100-level and 200-level promenades, the 300-level promenade, and the 400-level or mezzanine. The seats of these levels originally bore the colors red, orange, yellow, green, and blue, respectively; ... this color scheme has since been changed, mainly because the "blue seats" had become synonymous with rowdy behavior by fans, particularly those attending New York Rangers hockey games. It was a common sight for Rangers fans to set fire to the jerseys of fans from visiting teams, especially those from the New York Islanders, Boston Bruins, and the Philadelphia Flyers. Rangers fans in the blue seats would defend their home from the invading hordes of visiting teams' fans at all costs.

The current Garden opened in 1968, Madison Square Garden is the home venue for the New York Rangers of the NHL, the New York Knicks of NBA and the New York Liberty of the WNBA. The Garden or MSG as it is commonly referred to can seat more than 19,000 fans for basketball games and just over 18,000 for hockey games.

In addition, XM will be the sole presenting sponsor of the New York Rangers' on-ice ceremony to retire Messier's No. 11 jersey at Madison Square Garden prior to the Rangers - Edmonton Oilers game on January 12. The sponsorship is part of a multi-year marketing agreement with the Rangers that makes XM the official satellite radio partner of the team.

June 14, 1994 - After 54 years, the New York Rangers win the Stanley Cup at Madison Square Garden. It is the first time that a Stanley Cup has been won by the Rangers at the Garden.

Even with the flu, Wayne Gretzky had to enjoy this return to Madison Square Garden. Back in the building where he played the final game of his Hall of Fame career eight years earlier, Gretzky stood behind the Phoenix Coyotes bench for the first time in New York and coached his club to a 5-1 rout of the New York Rangers on Sunday night.
