Madison Square Garden: New York City
built 230 days ago
Madison Square Garden When it was designed by Sanford White, the Second Madison Square Garden was the second tallest building in New York City and had the largest auditorium (seating 8,000) in the United States. It houses a theater, concert hall, apartments, a roof garden, and the city's largest restaurant. It played host to all sorts of entertainment events, and was particularly successful because of the popularity of the sport of boxing in that day. In 1925 it was razed to make way for the headquarters of the New York Life Insurance Company.
The current Madison Square Garden is the fourth in a line of large, New York City arenas bearing that name. The first arena, located on Madison Square (where the arenas get their name), was built in 1879 as an open-air arena, owned at one time by showman, P.T. Barnum.
Many large popular-music concerts in New York City take place in Madison Square Garden. Particularly famous ones include The Concert for New York City following the September 11 attacks and John Lennon's final concert appearance before his murder in 1980. The Garden usually hosts a concert each year on New Years Eve, with the Knicks and Rangers usually playing on the road.
The Republican National Convention will be held for the first time ever in New York City at Madison Square Garden from August 30 through September 2, 2004. Nearly 50,000 visitors are expected to visit the city for the event.
